5 Ways to Support Immigrants & Create Belonging

The daily rhetoric we hear about immigrants can feel divisive, frustrating or confusing. Intercambio believes we can build a world where everyone is welcome, and where cross-cultural connection fosters a sense of belonging for all, one conversation at a time.
If you’re wondering how you can support immigrants in your community and across the country, here are five ideas to consider.

  • Get educated. Sound bites can be misleading, unclear or even scary. Do your own research. Learn about immigration trends in your community. Follow vetted, reputable news outlets using verified facts and named sources.
  • Be curious and practice cultural humility. We don’t know what we don’t know; seek to learn more about people who are different from you. Question your assumptions. Reflect on your cultural perspectives, learn about others’ experiences, and be open to new ideas. You’ll discover you have more in common with others than first meets the eye!
  • Volunteer to teach English. A great way to welcome newcomers is by giving your time! Language is a key tool for building connection. Intercambio’s English classes are relationship-based, bringing together volunteers and English learners to build skills, confidence and a sense of belonging. Volunteers support individuals, families, and communities while learning as much from English language learners as they learn from their teachers.
  • Donate to organizations supporting immigrant issues. There are many nonprofit groups that support immigrants in a myriad of ways, from legal assistance, to material support, to promoting intercultural celebrations, festivals and art. By donating to Intercambio, you support English language classes designed to build connections and skills, so immigrants can more easily feel a part of their new homes.
  • Practice empathy. The immigrant community is not a monolith. People come to the US from all over the world, for all kinds of reasons, with differing circumstances. Though global issues impact migration options and decisions, each story is unique. How might you feel in a similar situation? How would you want others to treat you? Remember the Platinum Rule! Treat others as they would like to be treated.
