Creating a Good Learning Space for Groups

When teaching a group (no matter how big or small…), think about the arrangement of your classroom. We often give class in less than perfect spaces, but we can usually move the chairs so that students are sitting in a semi-circle. The advantage of this is that everyone can see each other, making the classroom a warmer, more inclusive environment.

We all also tend to sit in the same place from class to class, and this means that students will often be working with the same partner. If you want to mix things up, a simple strategy is to move just the student who is on one end of the room to the complete opposite side. This will have the effect of switching everyone’s partner.
