Zonia is a hardworking Intercambio student from El Salvador who has just completed Level 6A in her second term with the program. In her class, she and the other student often act out various scenarios such as salesperson and customer at a store, and enjoy laughing at their pronunciation mistakes.
Zonia is very proud of her heritage. She reminisces, the “people are kind, …and very hardworking for everything.” She eagerly describes la cumbia, the popular style of dance, and memories of eating cangrejos, brown crabs, and visiting the beach.
Here in the United States, Zonia recognizes the importance of English; once, she had to defend herself whenshe was overcharged at a store. She recognizes the difficulty in communicating in drawn-out conversations, but nevertheless, she keeps practicing and improving. Zonia likes to use her English outside of class by doing her homework, watching the news, and listening to music, especially to her favorite song in English: Adele’s “Hello.”
