Intercambio Awarded $2 Million by Yield Giving, MacKenzie Scott

We are excited to announce some tremendously exciting news for both our organization and community. This morning, Yield Giving revealed that Intercambio has been selected from among more than 6,300 organizations to receive $2 million in unrestricted funds.

As you can imagine, we are complimented and thrilled nearly beyond words.

We are incredibly grateful to Yield Giving, Lever for Change, a nonprofit affiliate of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and MacKenzie Scott for recognizing our work as a community-led, community-focused organization creating substantial impact. We are honored to be in the company of our fellow recipients and send them our congratulations.

It is true that Intercambio is for and of the community, and we owe our success to many, many individuals and organizations who have helped us reach this important milestone. Our list of folks to thank is very long, and includes partners, members, donors, funders, board members, staff, and most importantly the volunteers and students who choose to spend their invaluable time with us.

We also want to thank Intercambio founders Lee Shainis and Shawn Camden who launched our organization in 2001. Their vision, leadership, drive, and thoughtfulness helped build an organization that challenges the notion of dependency, believing instead in the mutual benefit of bringing diverse groups together.

This global recognition validates our theory of change – that by bringing people together through English language classes and events, we can create connections that cross all manner of real or perceived barriers – religious, cultural, socioeconomic, and language. We know that this makes each of our lives richer and more textured, and it makes our community stronger.

Our mission and our vision of millions of people cultivating new levels of cross-cultural connection and belonging, one conversation at a time, will remain the same. Our commitment to facilitating connections to create a more fair, just, and inclusive society will remain the same. But our capacity to achieve our goals and the rate at which milestones are met will be dramatically changed. With this grant, we will set a course to connecting thousands more students and volunteers, increasing the quality and access of adult English language learning, building bridges, and changing lives.

Using the 2024-2026 Strategic Plan to guide decisions, we’ll map an accelerated path to greater impact and reach. Important discussions will include financial sustainability, monitoring and evaluation, program enhancement, capacity building, and community engagement. We’re excited to share details with you all as they become available.

Our annual fundraising event and gathering, Cambio, is April 12th. This year promises to be a celebration like no other. We hope to see all of you there, so we can thank you in person for all of your many contributions to Intercambio.
