Lesson Planning

One of our teachers was awarded a scholarship to attend the 2012 CAEPA (Colorado Adult Education Professional Association) conference.

Per the scholarship requirements, she compiled her notes from the very best sessions for the rest of you!

Planning a lesson

Determine What you want to teach and How you want to teach it. Use the PPP Format which has 3 stages: Presentation, Practice, and Production.

PRESENTATION: Incorporate interactive activities where the teacher introduces the lesson and the topic of the lesson. Teacher explains the topic during this phase.

PRACTICE: The teacher guides students through controlled pieces of language and the students try out the model/become familiar with the learned portion.

PRODUCTION: This stage is for teacher-facilitated, but student-generated interaction. Activities may include oral practice, question/answer activities, reading, and information gap activity.

Remember:

  • Add space for observations of students producing the language
  • Take notes of problems
  • During the lesson, observe what works or doesn’t work in your classroom.
