Reading Questions

Asking questions of students that force them to look both at the big and little picture is important. Here are some general questions to help you do that:

  • What is the author’s purpose?
  • What is the author doing in this paragraph?
  • How do you think the author felt when s/he wrote this part?
  • Why did the author put this information here?
  • What is being compared/contrasted here?
  • What alternatives does the author offer?
  • What is the author implying?
  • What is the author not telling you?
  • What is the author’s tone?
  • Would you have written this in a different way?
  • Who do you think the author expected to read this?
  • How would this piece have changed if the author left this portion out?
