Have students read out loud (a newspaper article, a story, etc). One student starts reading the article/story out loud, but they can stop reading whenever they want to. That student must then select another student to read. (If it is a one-on-one lesson, the student and teacher can switch off reading). This helps to keep everyone alert, as no one knows when the person before is going to stop reading. Also stop occasionally to discuss the article/story and make predictions as for what is to come.
Afterward, go over any vocabulary words or concepts that students struggled with.
