Teacher Tip – Using Letters to the Editor

Reading letters to the editor can be a great way for our students to get a pulse on their community. For those who read the paper regularly, try this fun take on reading the newspaper.

1. Over a week, or so, gather a series of letters that cover the same topic.
2. Bring the letters in to your class.
3. Use the reading process to go through each letter. Alternatively, in groups, give each student a different letter and a few minutes to read it. Cycle through each letter this way.
4. Talk about each letter – is it from a positive, negative or neutral standpoint.
5. Discuss what the topic of the original news article may have been.
