What to Expect in the Unexpected

The wave of emotions that comes with expecting your first child is unlike any other. You feel joy and anxiety, excitement, and nervousness. You know life will change forever when your little one enters the world.

Now, imagine having those feelings – and living in a country where you don’t speak the native language. Imagine becoming a parent, knowing others rely on you, and being unable to communicate with doctors and nurses.

When Rocio found out she was pregnant with her first child she was understandably thrilled and nervous. The excitement of a new baby mixed with the fear of being unable to communicate with healthcare providers. Rocio knew learning English would help her provide a better life for her child. During her pregnancy, she found Intercambio and began meeting one-on-one with a volunteer teacher to prepare for her new life as a mom.

When her son was born with Down Syndrome, English became more important than ever. With a child who needs additional care, she renewed her dedication to learning English and connecting with the community for support.

In just two years of English classes with Intercambio, Rocio has built up confidence in her English and communicates with little fear. “Before Intercambio, I spoke no English, but now I can talk with the doctors and advocate for what my son needs.” But her story does not end there.

Because of your continued support, Rocio is able to engage in Intercambio classes online! Your generosity has ensured that Intercambio classes continue so that Rocio and her classmates can develop connections

and overcome isolation.

With your support, Rocio can keep building a better life for herself and her son.

You are the power behind this work. Thank you for making an impact that will last for generations to come.
