Teacher Tip – Building confidence in your students

Use routines. Students become more confident when they know what to expect. Begin each class the same way so that students, even those who arrive late, are able to catch on and participate quickly. Beginning with greetings every class, or going over simple information such as the weather can fill those first few minutes.

Teach students some positions of power. Research shows that our body language actually affects our feelings. By faking confidence, we actually become confident. Amy Cuddy’s TedTalk video gives some great examples.  https://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are?language=en

Provide specific positive feedback. Celebrate your student’s success.

Create a “can do” attitude in c lass. Repeat the student mantra every c lass. Before students can learn English, they need to believe in themselves.

Intercambio Student Mantra:

  • I can learn English.
  • I will practice.
  • No excuses.
