Use photos and headlines to predict: Cut out a photo and give it to the students to look at. Ask the students (descriptive and inference) questions about the photo and list the key words and phrases students use in their answers.
Example questions to ask students
– Is the person young or old?
– What are they doing in the photo?
– How old do you think the person is?
– Why is there yellow tape behind the person?
Then, give the students the headline and see if it matches their predictions. Next, give the students the story that accompanies the photo and headline. Lastly, ask the students to read the story.
