Often grammar books communicate to students to “not use stative verbs in the present progressive”. Stative verbs often indicate a long-term condition. But, there are many contradicting instances of this occurring every day. For instance, the fast food empire that claims “I’m loving it”. This phrase relates to an enjoyable moment of eating a burger and not a long-term state of enjoyment. Therefore verb “rules” should actually be referred to as guidelines. When students ask about such instances, be sure to focus on the temporary aspect of the particular situation.
